Microsoft vs Foss Essay Example
Microsoft versus Foss Essay Microsoftââ¬â¢s Foss Patent Infringement Holly Stark ITT Technical IT 302 Abstract This paper takes an inside and out gander at the cases from Microsoft that FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) submitted patent encroachment in 2006. It likewise examines how the occasions have affected FOSS, regardless of whether adversely or emphatically and how the activities have changed both since 2006. Microsoftââ¬â¢s Foss Patent Infringement Free programming is superb and corporate America appears to cherish it. Its regularly great stuff that can be downloaded free off the Internet and afterward duplicated voluntarily. Its flexible it very well may be altered to perform practically any enormous scope figuring errand and best of all its accident safe. The greater part the organizations in the Fortune 500 are believed to utilize the free working framework Linux in their server farms. In 2006, Microsoft cast a shadow over Free and Open Source Software by asserting that they had abused 235 licenses, for example, the Linux portion, Samba, OpenOffice. organization and others. Fossââ¬â¢s lawful agent Eben Moglen battled that product is a numerical calculation and, accordingly, not patentable. Parloff, R. 2007) But what of Microsoftââ¬â¢s claims? It is safe to say that they are substantial? Be that as it may, first to answer that you have to comprehend what a patent truly is. A patent is basically a restricted imposing business model whereby the patent holder is conceded the selective option to make, use, and sell the protected development for a constrained timeframe. Conceding restrictive rights to the creator is expected to energize the speculation of time and assets into the improvement of new and helpful revelations. When the term of insurance has finished, the protected development enters the open area. The Supreme Court expressed in a consistent conclusion that licenses have been given too promptly for as long as two decades, and parts are presumably invalid. For an assortment of specialized reasons, numerous impartial onlookers presume that product licenses are particularly defenseless against court challenge. This decision works in FOSSââ¬â¢s favor. Licenses can be nullified in court on various grounds; others can without much of a stretch be imagined around. Still others may be substantial, yet not encroached under the specific conditions. FOSS has some notable supporters working in its corner also. In 2005, six of them IBM (Charts, Fortune 500), Sony, Philips, Novell, Red Hat (Charts) and NEC set up the Open Invention Network (OIN) to secure an arrangement of licenses that may present issues for organizations like Microsoft, which are known to re present a patent danger to Linux. So if Microsoft ever sued Linux merchant Red Hat for patent encroachment, for example, OIN may sue Microsoft in reprisal, attempting to charge circulation of Windows. Parloff, R. 2007) A fundamental lawful examination of FOSS licenses directed implies that the novel permitting model utilized by FOSS is legitimately legitimate, a reality that loans considerable credit to the development. Different signs with regards to the sufficiency of the licenses are likewise reassuring; a decision in Germany that has perceived the legitimacy of the General Public License (GPL) ( J. Hoppner,2004), which further serves to pressure that FOSS is a worldwide marvel that is reforming the whole field of programming advancement. Microsoft understood that something needed to change with regards to licenses. They fundamentally had three options. They could sit idle, it could begin suing different organizations to prevent them from utilizing its licenses, or, they could start authorizing its licenses to different organizations in return for either sovereignties or access to their licenses (a cross-permitting bargain). They decided to do the last mentioned. In December 2003, Microsofts new permitting unit really got started, and soon the organization had marked cross-authorizing agreements with such tech firms as Sun, Toshiba, SAP and Siemens. On November 2, 2006, Microsoft opened up to the world and reported an association with Novell to team up to help Microsofts Windows, an exclusive working framework, work with Novells Suse Linux, which depends on open-source code. Also, the product creators struck an arrangement on licenses intended to give clients genuine feelings of serenity about utilizing Novells open-source items. This association made Novell the main organization in the business that had the option to furnish the client with the code to run Linux, yet in addition with a patent agreement from Microsoft. Evers, Joris 2006) Some idea that it indicated that Microsoft was somewhat being compelled to consider Linux to be a noteworthy contender and the FOSS model as a reasonable plan of action. (Upfold, Peter 2006) My closely-held conviction is this was an assault on the open source network. Microsoft hasnââ¬â¢t really changed its tune; itââ¬â¢s still effectively assaulting free programming and attempting to canc el GNU/Linux while advancing Windows and other exclusive programming like they are correlative to free programming, which they are most certainly not. Itââ¬â¢s PR jabber and Microsoft is acceptable at PR. From that point forward, Novell was sold in 2010 to Attachmate Corp. furthermore, a simultaneous offer of certain licensed innovation resources was offered to CPTN Holdings LLC, a consortium of innovation organizations composed by Microsoft Corporation. It plays directly under the control of Microsoftââ¬â¢s PR crusade, which makes progress toward a combination where Microsoft controls the two sides of the opposition and afterward wrecks the side which is less positive for Microsoft. Microsoft has done that again and again for a long time and casualties incorporate goliaths like IBM and Apple. While FOSS licenses by and large ensure end client opportunity in the domain of copyright, they have no viable assurance against dangers from programming licenses, particularly from substances outside the FOSS people group. In reacting to the danger from programming patent holders, the FOSS people group has made imaginative permitting plans. ( Davidson, S. J 2006) Permissive licenses, for example, the Apache licenses, have diverse patent rights statements from equal licenses, for example, the MPL and GPL. In managing likely patent cases, GPL 2. has a ââ¬Å"Freedom or Deathâ⬠end statement â⬠ââ¬Å"any patent must be authorized for everyones free use or not authorized by any means. â⬠GPL 2. 0 doesn't permit the improvement of programming that requires any sort of permit installments for outsider licenses. (Programmer. J. n. d. ) GPL 3. 0 was drafted to adapt to worldwide programming patent dangers and to give similarity more non-GPL FOSS licenses. The current GPL draft 3. 0 keeps GPL 2. 0ââ¬â¢s copyleft highlight and incorporates new arrangements tending to developing figuring issues, for example, patent issues, free programming permit similarity, and computerized rights the executives (ââ¬Å"DRMâ⬠). McMillan, R 2007) As of today, Microsoft is as yet assaulting free programming with two kinds of strategies. The strategies to a great extent incorporate suit and the utilization of purported Fear-Uncertainty-Doubt (FUD) strategies intended to sabotage the well known impression of the open source reasoning. This year alone they have won a few cases either by and large, in claim or countersuits against Motorolaââ¬â¢s Android highlights. The remainder of the FOSS people group is by all accounts nervous and holding on to perceive what occurs straightaway.

Using Essay Samples to Learn a New Language
Using Essay Samples to Learn a New LanguageA combination of research and experience has lead me to find that a good way to learn a new language is to use essay samples. The best way I've found to begin is to find several essay samples and read them carefully. I know when I see one, I can almost automatically tell if it's going to be good or not.English is my first language, so I can still identify a poor one-sentence example. I'm also not afraid to admit that I still have a lot to learn about writing good English. It's taken me some time, but my abilities to write good are improving. The point is that if you are beginning to write in a new language, using essay samples can make the learning process more fun. One of the advantages to learning in this way is that you don't have to give up any of your comfort zone. You're doing things in a very different way, which means you may have to learn a new way of thinking about grammar and punctuation. This is often uncomfortable, but it will als o be very rewarding. Most people who begin to write in a new language soon discover that the challenge and excitement of writing are almost impossible to put into words. So many English writers start their day by writing a little poem, a short story, a dissertation, or even an article. But I should caution you that, once you've started to write in a new language, you are much more likely to forget your mistakes. You're also likely to make more of them. So it's imperative that you take a look at a few essay samples from writers who are native speakers of the new language you're trying to learn.Once you have read through a few of these essays, make a list of those that best describe how you felt when you first learned the language. These are the ones that will give you the most confidence as you begin to write. Often, you will find that one or two have such a strong impact on you that you can't stop yourself from using them again.Once you have your essay samples, use them to supplement your learning of the new language. Try to use them to work on writing sentences and phrases that sound like you would say them. You might be surprised at how quickly you can master a new language by repeating what you hear every day.As you can see, you can use essay samples to teach yourself a new language. Using them helps you immerse yourself in the new language, and it is no wonder that so many people are so happy to learn another language. The results are clear: you learn a new language faster than you could possibly learn it on your own.

Think of Global Warming - Free Essay Example
Credibility: Throughout this speech I have used many credible resources to back my statements and claims up. Preview: First we will be looking at reasons for there to be mass extinctions. Next, we will talk about the reasoning for having limited food and water supplies. Lastly, we will discuss the causes of increased amounts of floods and droughts. Mass extinction will occur When people think of global warming, they just think about the temperatures rising, but itââ¬â¢s so much more than that. If the temperatures continue to change, there will be a mass extinction. Many animals rely on heat and warmer temperatures to stay alive, and some rely on colder temperatures. Jeffery Kulger, a writer for Times Magazine, stated that ââ¬Å"From 1960 to 2017, the Alpine snow season shortened by 38 daysââ¬âstarting an average of 12 days later and ending 26 days earlier than normal.â⬠This is an example of the snow loss in the Alps.à Another example would be from the artic. If the snow melts earlier, greenery will show which means animals and insects will be out earlier than they should be. This can cause animals and bird to arrive too late to feed. Which will then lead to starvation and then death. This can also affect people who live in the artic. Many typical hunting grounds will be vacant due to animals relocating to colder locations or from them dying off because of the heat. Some areas in the world will also be colder. With more atmospheric energy available, it can cause harsher storms to occur in different areas all over the world (Keating, p.1). These kinds of storms may occur in warmer regions, which will also affect the way humans and animals live there. Temperatures will rise/ fall which will lead to migration and irregular weather. 1. When the temperatures rise, winters will be shorter. The top five warmest years ever have all occurred within the past 8 years (Climate Central, p.1). This causes animals to migrate at different times. An examp le would be a colony of butterflies. Once it gets too cold for them to live here, they will move to a warmer region, which is usually Mexico. If the temperatures fluctuate, the butterflies may leave too early or too soon, and will end up dying off. This can also ruin the soil for plants. Thawing soils can release large quantities of heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere (Francis, p.1). This can then lead to the plant to shut down or die. Extreme cold may still occur, and it will only take a short amount of time for the cold to affect the plant. Plants may over heat due to the lack of water supply. Animals will die off due to not having food, which will cause humans to not have meat nor plants to eat, which will eventually cause us to die off if there is no solution. According to NASA and the EPA, if global warming continues unchecked, it will cause significant climate change, extreme weather events and other severe natural and societal impacts (Lallanila, p.1). Floods and droughts will cause limited food/water supply 1. Global warming will eventually cause the ocean levels to rise due to the melting ice and glaciers located in colder regions. If the water level rises, major flooding will occur in areas like New York, California, Florida, and as stated before Italy. By the end of the century, if we keep on emitting carbon dioxide most coastal cities will be flooded. (Francis, p.1). Once flooding occurs, many will lose their electricity and even their homes. This can also lead to people losing their animals and any food they couldââ¬â¢ve been growing. 3. Other parts of the world that are used to the rain fall may now get droughts. Animals and plants may die off due to lack of water and shelter, and this will eventually have an effect on the humans living in that area. This can also cause more forest fires like the one that happened in California last year (Busby, p.1). Conclusion: Overall, global warming is a growing issue. If we do not bring awareness to global warming, we will face mass extinctions, limited food and water supplies, and an increase of floods and droughts. Anyone can help with this rising issue. Even doing small simple things around the house could be beneficial. Human activities that contribute to this issue need to be controlled and eventually stopped so we can protect the environment for the future. References Bradford, A. and Pappas, S. (2017). In addition, French has five accents: four for vowels and one for a consonant, which English, of course, does not have. Vowels are the most problematic for non-native speakers, especially speakers of Germanic languages like English and German, who do not use the muscles in their face and mouth as much as the French. In the table below, start at the top with the links to pronunciation guides for French consonants andà French vowels.à Links to Detailed Letter Pages Then click on the capital letters in the table below and youll move on to the letter pages, each of which offers a detailed description of the pronunciation of that letter, including letter combinations, numerous examples and information about the accents that may be used with that letter. For each letter, note the rules governing its pronunciation, and follow them. Bilbo Baggins, An Unlikely Hero - 1466 Words
Bilbo Baggins, An Unlikely Hero ââ¬Å"Heroes are made by the path they choose, not the powers they are graced withâ⬠(Ashton, 92). Specific characteristics come to mind when one envisions are hero, such as extraordinary strength and great courage. Heroes most commonly receive recognition for notable talents and remembered for their astonishing deeds and accomplishments. For example, Superman possesses superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to fly, qualities most frequently associated with heroes. However, not all heroes fit this model. Just a small hobbit from The Shire, Bilbo Baggins does not possess any great strengths or abilities, and many would view Bilbo as the antithesis to Superman. In J.R.R Tolkiens, The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins portrays an unlikely hero due to his small size and stout appearance, his cowardly personality, and his tendency to appear as an onus to the group. However, through his actions of bravery, Bilbo demonstrates that anyone, no matter what size or shape, can perform heroic deeds. A hero possesses the mentality of a person of great courage and ability. Most associate heroes with extraordinary physical strength and special talents and abilities, such as Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf. The Hobbit, depicts a well known hobbit from The Shire, Bilbo Baggins. On the Movie Lord of the Flies Essay Example For Students
On the Movie Lord of the Flies Essay Essay On the Movie Lord of the FliesEssay On the Movie Lord of the FliesAfter viewing the movie The Lord of the Flies, I would say that this movie isnot worth watching. In this essay I will give 3 good reasons why one shouldnot waste time watching this film. The 3 reasons are the music, special effects, and the bad setting/props. First of all the music in the Lord of the Flies movie does not match the scenesto the movie. My first example is the choir song, Jacks choir always sings. Iwould say it was not suitable for the choir. The song kept repeating, andrepeating, I really got irritated hearing it over and over again. My secondexample is when the boys were hunting for the beast. The music was too slow. It didnt match mood of the boys when they were hunting. The music showed as ifthe boys are going to a party. Secondly, The special effects in the movie was not done properly for the film. My first example is the editing of the movie, explains they did not edit themovie carefully. When a scene was cut you could focus on a different picture, then go back to what happened. My second example is that the movie was blackand white. Since their was a lot of special effect in the film the movie shouldhave been coloured. The special effects would have looked neater since a lot ofkilling was shot. If the movie was coloured the audience would focus on thescreen often, rather than seeing a black and white screen. The settings and the props were not prepared well. My first example is that theboys shirts, were clean everyday. Their clothes should be black and grey, because of the dirt and all the smoke from the fire. For example Simons shirtwas a clean as white, when Simon was watching the other boys spill blood out ofthe pig. The island was to big, as the book describes it. There was no platform, and scar as described in the book. In conclusion, you should watch a coloured version of The Lord of the Flies. Iwould suggest that the book is also great to read. Thats why Im saying thatthis movie is not worth watching because the 3 good reasons I gave explains why. English

The Lascaux Caves as World Heritage Sites
Table of Contents Introduction Background Presentation of the Lascaux cave Inspiration of the Cave Paintings Features of the cave works and its artists Conclusion References Introduction The Lascaux caves are the most popular in the world. The Lascaux Caves in France were discovered in 1940. The paintings were created around 17,000 years ago, which makes them some of the oldest and iconic expressions of art that remain to date. The Lascaux caves are located in Franceââ¬â¢s Dordogne, in the Và ©zà ¨re Valley, 30 kilometers north of Sarlat in South West France. They are tourist attraction sites known for their Paleolithic age cave paintings. The original caves are close to Montignac (Lacanette 2009).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Lascaux Caves as World Heritage Sites specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More There are seven sections of the Lascaux caves namely: ââ¬Å"the Great Hall of the Bulls, the Painted Gallery, the Lateral Passage, the Chamber of Engravings, the Main Gallery, the Chamber of Felines, and the Shaft of the Dead Manâ⬠(Lacanette 2009: 2538). Based on the multiple cover paintings on the Lascaux caves, researchers believe that for many centuries those caves have been populated by different tribes. The most appealing of these chambers is the Hall of the Bulls, which presents the pictures of horses, bulls, and stags. The painting in the Shaft of the Dead Man also presents a particular interest due to the unusual proportion of the human figures (Lacanette 2009: 2544). Background Most archeologists and scholars agree that paintings found in the cave can be dated around 15,000 BC, based on radiocarbon analysis of various artifacts and charcoal discovered in the cave. The scholars and archeologists also propose that the paintings came into being within a period of several centuries. The Lascaux cave was discovered in 1940 by a group of boys who were looking for their lost dog. In December of the same year, the caves received statutory historic memento protection. Authorities opened the caves to the public in 1948 disregarding conservation and preservation issues. The caves received over 100,000 visitors yearly (Muriel 2011:8). The huge number of visitors and artificial lighting caused considerable destruction to the historical site. Consequently, significant archeological data disappeared as the lackluster of the paintings decreased. Worse still, devastating algae layers of bacteria and dark calcite crystals appeared on the walls of the cave. Ultimately, the authorities banned further public visits to the caves and initiated revival efforts. This arrested the development of crystals and reversed the development of algae and bacteria (Muriel 2011:10). The authorities carried out constant monitoring as the caves remained closed to the public. In 1979, UNESCO included Lascaux cave and various other decorated caves in the Và ©zà ¨re Valley i nto the list of World Heritages Sites. In 1983, cautiously completed replica referred to as Lascaux II began receiving visitors. Replication took ten years as Monique Peytral, a local artist, reproduced the paintings with incredible attention to detail (Sacred Destinations 2010).Advertising Looking for research paper on archeology? This is the original cave, which has 600 paintings decorated on its wall and close to 1,500 engravings. Most of the paintings depict both live and extinct animals. Some of the animals etched on the walls are horses with minute heads, and cloven with round stomachs, which are representative of the Przewalski horses from Asia as well as horses common in Chinese paintings (Huppatz 2010), as well as deer, which are graceful beasts with excellent groups of antlersThere are also six cats in the paintings, two bison of male species and some unclear two-horned beasts. There is a rare explanatory scene pointing to a hunting outing or a shamanistic ritual, crowned by exciting geometrical designs, which include rectangles and ragged lines. Lascaux II is 200 meters away from Lascaux I. It is found in a cement bunker, and copies the two major chambers of the original Lascaux Caves. There are two hundred replica paintings occupying over 128 feet in length (Huppatz 2010: 137). Inspiration of the Cave Paintings One of the interesting questions that are raised by scientists revolves around the need for humans to paint images or etch figures of either humans or animals on the walls of the caves. For instance, studies suggest that the Dead Man scene in Lascaux, was aimed at preventing the image from taking the soul of its creator. The absence of recorded information makes it hard to determine the primary objective of the cave paintings. The qualit y of the cave paintings is high and the concerted efforts applied to such work, including the extent of applying scaffolding to get to the apex of the walls, may be an indication that the caves were holy sites fit for rituals. According to Mauriac, there are three primary theories revolving around the pre-historic paintings on the walls of the caves (Muriel, 2011: 14). First, the prehistoric man may have created the paintings and etchings on the walls as decorations, with preference of figures of animals that were vital to human survival. Second, man may have made the paintings with the belief that they would create a sense of magic to help the hunters. Third, humans may have used the paintings of animals to document their hunting expeditions (Muriel 2011). Features of the cave works and its artists The area of the cave depicts a variety of mineralogical features including different variations of the surface with regard to the grain size, reflectance and hardness that are distribute d between the Hall of the Bulls and the Axial Gallery (Huppatz 2010). These variations are also evident on the Passageway, the Apse, the Nave and the Shaft (Huppatz 2010). The figures found in the first sector are on calcited limestone, which is both irregular and hard for engraving. As such, this sector collects numerous paintings on the walls, achieved by either pigment application or spray technique. The soft nature of the second area permitted the creation of engraved figures and paintings by spray technique.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Lascaux Caves as World Heritage Sites specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The variation of the two surfaces was a determining factor in conservation of the Lascaux. The beautiful display of works in the cave indicates a superior adaptation of the artists to the physical characteristics of the walls, allowing them to provide multiple works based on the minerals f ound on the surface. For instance, engravings were created on soft limestone, while paintings were projected on calcite surfaces (Huppatz 2010). The people of Lascaux were culturally homogenous owing to the existence of a general perception of similar designs and demonstrations regarding styles used, such as the single archeological layer on the floor of the cave. According to Holden, the wall paintings and etchings were made using natural objects. Sharp tools, such as spears, were used to etch into the rock, while the paint colors came from berries, clay, soot and charcoal. ââ¬Å"The tools used to apply the paint could have been made by attaching straw, leaves, moss, or hair to sticks. They might have used hollow bones or reeds to spray the color on, similar to an airbrush techniqueâ⬠(Holden 2003: 234). The people of Lascaux also used mineral dyes for paintings. The mineral dyes were composed of iron in its sub elements like hematite, gore, turgite, limonite, geothite, as we ll as, manganese in its sub elements like manganite, braunite and black ocher (Holden 2003) . The people of Lascaux were gifted with an artistic solid pathway as seen in the clarity and quality of completed paitings and etchiings (Holden 2003). An analysis of the composition reveals multiple irregularities sorrrounding the cave, such as the evident disparity of signs used by the Lascaux people for either male or female related signs. Parietal signs related to the male species include ââ¬Å"the arrows, the harpoons, the sticks and the featuresâ⬠while the ââ¬Å"oval claviformes, points and formsâ⬠were related to the female species. This affirms that, contrary to misinformed views, parietal art is borne out of very complex thought. (Holden 2003: 248) Conclusion Much as the Lascaux caves are classified as World Heritage sites, they face multiple threats to their continued existence. As such, there must be concerted efforts by all stakeholders to preserve these historical s ites for viewing by future generations. Such measures include constant monitoring by the relevant authorities to make sure that issues like growth of algae and bacteria do not occur again and if they do, they are cleared as quickly as possible. Proper research must also be carried out to determine how best to keep the environment in its natural setting, even with the use of modern inventions. The installation of air conditioners in 2001 was a right step but due to lack of proper research, the air conditioners resulted in white molds which were bad for the caves. Maintenance of the caves must be a regular exercise so as to make the project more sustainable and appreciated (McCully 2010:n.p).Advertising Looking for research paper on archeology? Expository-Migration and Change Essay Example
Expository Expository-Migration and Change Essay Expository-Migration and Change Essay Essay Topic: Expository Chance means change. For decades, thousands of migrants arriving in Australia, all face the same dilemma, how do I live here? With such a different environment and lifestyle to get accustomed to, how can a person adjust themselves to a new way of life after living their whole life somewhere else? But does it matter? Migrants have a free choice. They come and stay if they see what they like, if not they take the next flight back to wherever. But for the most part, those migrants wonââ¬â¢t see what they could have here.It seems more and more migrants are coming into Australia to settle and 16 ââ¬âyear-old, Wendy Chan, who recently arrived in Melbourne south, is no exception. Wendy is currently trying to adjust to her new home with a care-free approach. She does not take any harsh feelings in moving to Australia, and even though the language barrier is difficult to overcome, she is trying her best because she found this journey to be enjoyable. ââ¬Å"I go to an intensive English language school and I made a few friends. Everyone is very friendly. By being able to attend school and learn about the new home and culture that they live in, migrants would be able to adjust easily into their new society, making their experience more enjoyable and worthwhile. Because of this, the number of migrants makes up 25% of the population of Australia (2009) and is increasing as the years go by (The Australians Bureau of Statistics). Thus, meaning that migrants are warming up to the Australian way and is likely to want to settle as permanent residents. But this is not the case with other individual migrants. When asked about other migrants; ââ¬Å"Everyone is from different places and all our English is about the same level, so we get along pretty well. â⬠Wendy sees that other migrants are in the same boat as her and is treated decently, but unfortunately some migrants are treated quite the opposite. They get cussed, pushed, bullied, and denied their right as seen on the 2005 Cronulla beaches, where the biggest racism riot between Australians and Lebanese people occurred. Part of this misdemeanour is not their fault, but is of the original inhabitants.Maybe the Australians donââ¬â¢t like being invaded by unfamiliar races and nationalities, or maybe they just donââ¬â¢t like the way the ââ¬Ënew kidââ¬â¢ dresses. Either way, this is a very difficult situation for migrants to handle. On top of a stressful journey, migrants are forced to endure the aggressive behaviour of the Australians. Please. Are we so jaded that we canââ¬â¢t be bothered with our jobs and have to take out our boredom on these asylum seekers? These deeds are exactly what are preventing migrants to adapt properly, preventing them to see what a great country Australia is and all the benefits that it can offer. We are soiling our reputation as a multicultural country with these acts. A part of a migrantââ¬â¢s journey is for them to adapt to the new country and live t heir ways. What if a migrant does not want to change for the better? This only causes problems for them. ââ¬Å"The biggest problem is my English is not good. â⬠Wendy Chan confesses, this is also every other migrantââ¬â¢s problem as well. As researched by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2001, 16% of the population of Australians all spoke a different language other than English at home. This is all due to the years of immigration, imagine now, ten years later, how many more languages have we picked up and increased? But that is not the point here, a migrant who comes from a different background, of course, would know a language other than English, and is probably best at that than English too. But does that give them the excuse of not learning English because itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëdifficultââ¬â¢? Migrants who choose to live in Australia, hi, we are AUSTRALIA and in this country, we speak ENGLISH, if you want to live here too, speak ENGLISH. Immigrants, not Australian s, must adapt. Take it or leave it. â⬠(Julia Gillard, march 2011). If a migrant would only see the positive instead of the negatives, life would be very easy. The endless opportunities await them, if they are willing to open their eyes to those chances. Itââ¬â¢s hard, adaption, well at first, it is, but as time goes on a migrant will unknowingly adjust themselves to the Australian way. Whether they want to or not, if they want to stay here, they will have to change and learn about the country before them.

Meningitis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Meningitis - Essay Example s severe and resolves without specific treatment, while bacterial meningitis can be quite severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disability. Meningitis hearing loss typically appears after a bout with meningitis. Before the 1990s, Haemophilus influenzae Type B (Hib) was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis, but with new vaccines as part of routine immunizations, the occurrence of this invasive disease has reduced. Today, Streptococcus pneumoniae and N. meningitidis are the leading causes of bacterial meningitis. It can be caused by various infectious agents, including viruses, fungi, and protozoa, but bacteria produce the most life-threatening infection. Factors such as age, history of head trauma cerebrospinal fluid leaks, and immune status may help determine the causative agent. The bacteria that is responsible for meningitis are the meningococcus (N. meningitidis), most important because of its potential to cause epidemics; influenza bacillus (H. influenzae); and various strains of pneumococci, streptococci, or staphylococci. H. influenzae occurs in infants and young children but only rarely in the elderly, and its course and symptoms resemble those of N. meningitidis. In adults, the bacterium pneumococcus (S. pneumoniae) is a common cause of meningitis. Meningitis hearing loss can range in varying degrees, mild, moderate, severe, profound or total. Though meningitis is a cause of hearing loss, there are others which are congenital or acquired. Hearing loss can be classified by the auditory system that is defective. The causes can be divided into two basic types: conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss is caused by anything that interferes with the transmission of sound from the outer to the inner ear. Possible causes include: middle ear infections (otitis media); collection of fluid in the middle ear ("glue ear" in children); blockage of the outer ear (wax); damage to the eardrum by infection or an

Cyberharassment Laws Thesis Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Cyberharassment Laws - Thesis Example the most imperative issues with the manner these laws have been implemented is the fact that each state has a certain level of uniqueness in relation to the manner these laws have been implemented or applied for instance: In the United States, the penal code in relation to cyber-harassment in Alabama is quite different with cyber-harassment penal code in Alaska. This simply means that these laws differ on their efficacy as well as challenges (Sternberg, 2014). Apart from the United States, other countries that have also implemented cyber-harassment laws, identifying it as a criminal offense is the Republic of Philippines, Canada as well as Australia. It is quite an important issue to investigate in the contemporary society with a purpose of eliminating possible flaws that may be associated with these laws, taking into consideration that communication technologies are replacing traditional modes of communication at an increasing rate (Sternberg, 2014). The concept of cyber-harassment has been described has an act of repeated electronic contacts, driven by the purposes of creating distress on the targeted recipient (Easttom & Taylor, 2011). However, in order to clarify such acts as harassments, most law-makers claim that a reasonable person, possessing similar information, must consider it sufficient to create distress on their targeted recipients. There are certain considerations that have been given a high sense of priority in relation to cyber-harassment. To begin with, targeted victims of cyber-harassment may not even be in a position to determine that they are being subjected under harassment. Additionally, cyber-harassment is usually accomplished through the use of communication technology, mostly through social-communication technologies; this may be undertaken by a group of individuals or in some cases just an individual (Easttom & Taylor, 2011). Sociologists have claimed that actions considered cyber-harassment are inclusi ve of; destruction of data,

Essay --
Is human nature fundamentally good or bad? Mengzi argues for the instinctive goodness of human nature; however, admits our inherent goodness must be encouraged through propriety. Mengzi treats nature as oneââ¬â¢s natural ââ¬Å"potential, inclinations, or capacitiesâ⬠(Liu 68). It is important to note, however, that he only views nature as the beginning. Mengzi believes that the way we behave as mature humans is the result of how successful we are in fulfilling our nature. Other Confucians, like Xunxi, argued ââ¬Å"human nature is bad; his goodness is the result of manââ¬â¢s deliberate effortâ⬠(86); however, Mengzi believed the contrary to be true. According to Mengzi, nature refers to the natural inclinations of humans. Thus, any development in the opposite direction is a direct consequence of some form of external stimuli. Mengzi views nature as a ââ¬Å"species-specific notionâ⬠(68) that separate us from lesser animals. More specifically, humans are distinct from animals because they are born with moral virtues. Mengzi believed that because all humans belong to the same species, all humans possess the same universal nature. He goes further by claiming that due to our collective universal nature, any differences demonstrated by mature humans are owing to an ââ¬Å"external environment and individual effortâ⬠(69). For the purposes of this paper, let us assume that Mengzi is correct in his argument for the innate goodness of human nature. So if humans naturally tend toward virtue and all possess the sprouts of morality within, what rationalizes the inconsistency between instinctive goodness and manifested badness? Although Mengzi highlights the heart/mind of our nature desires moral virtue, he also acknowledges that ââ¬Å"desire for physical comfort and material g... ... chef. While it is true that a humanââ¬â¢s physical and biological attributes are determined biologically, no two humans are actually identical. That being said, how can all humanââ¬â¢s morals be a biologically determined constant? It would be more plausible to think that while humans have the capacity for moral virtue, the extent on which they are able to actualize this capacity differs as much between people as physical traits such as taste. This leads us to another criticism. The second example is also flawed. Consider the Iron Chef Bobby Flay. He is known for, amongst other things, being a world renowned chef as well as a television show called BBQ with Bobby Flay. Although many people would view his cooking as amazing, these tastes are not shared by all (a vegetarian for example). This is just another example of his flawed belief of a shared and universal human nature.

Charles’ Law and Absolute Zero
Date of experiment: November 4, 2010 Date submitted: November 11, 2010 Introduction: As per Charlesââ¬â¢ Law, there is a linear relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas. Charles discovered that -273à °C is the point at which a gas has no volume. Since that's as cold as he thought things could ever get, that originated the idea of absolute zero. In this experiment, Charlesââ¬â¢ Law was applied and made into data to determine an experimental value for Absolute Zero. To do so, a fixed amount of gas was confined in a small, uniform sample tube. The temperature of the gas was changed, by being placed in water. The expected result is that as the temperature of the gas gets cooler (decreases), the volume of gas will decrease. Procedure: A 400mL beaker was filled with tap water and place on a hot plate until the thermometer read 55à °C. Then a sample tube filled with two mercury plugs was obtained from the instructor. With a ruler, the distance between the two mercury plugs was recorded. Using small rubber bands, the sample tube was strapped to the ruler, which was then attached to the bottom of thermometer.A cork was attached onto the top of the thermometer, and then clamped in the beaker of pre-heated water. The initial temperature and distance between each plug in the pre-heated water were then recorded. Ice was added and stirred every so often to cool the temperature of the water. When the beaker was going to overflow, small amounts of the water were removed by a pipet. The temperature and distance between each plug were then recorded every two minutes. Eight sets of temperatures were recorded when the goal temperature of 0. à °C was achieved. Data: 1) Temperature and Distance Between Mercury Plugs Every 2mins Time (minutes)| Temperature of water (à °C)| Distance between plugs (mm)| 0 (Plugs out of water)| 49. 8| 60. 2 (in room temp)| 2 (Plugs in water)| 46. 3| 63. 8| 4| 42. 2| 63. 3| 6| 39. 3| 62. 2| 8| 24. 9| 60. 0| 10| 19. 1| 58. 6| 12| 7. 8| 56. 6| 14| 1. 9| 55. 1| 16| 0. 1| 54. 4| 18| 0. 1| 54. 4| Calculations: 1) Line of best fit: y=0. 1981x+54. 752 Slope (m): 0. 198 mm/C Y-Intercept (b): 54. 8 mm 2) Absolute zero (V=0): -276. 8à °C 3) % Error:Excepted value: -273à °C Discussion: My results show that as the temperature of the water decreased, the distance between the two mercury plugs decreased. This supports Charlesââ¬â¢ Law which states . When creating my graph, I did not include the first initial temperature and length recordings. The plot was not anywhere near the others, and would have thrown off the slope. My value for absolute zero was fairly close to the excepted -273à °C. There was a small difference of 3. 8à °C between the two values, with a percent error or 1. 4%.My results were expected because I was obviously not going to get the perfect -273à °C absolute zero value, due to experimental error. Sources of experimental error that could occur are if the initial temperature of the water was over 55à °C and if the mercury plugs were not fully submerged in the water. If the water was over 55à °C, then the ruler would have deformed from melting. This would make the rulerââ¬â¢s readings unreliable. If the mercury plugs were not fully submerged in the water then they would not get the full effect of temperature change.

John Fowlesââ¬â¢s novel The Collector - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 831 Downloads: 7 Date added: 2019/10/10 Did you like this example? According to psychologist Andrew Newberg, words can change someoneââ¬â¢s brain. He says that one single word can influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress. (Newberg, 2015). Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "John Fowlesââ¬â¢s novel The Collector" essay for you Create order In the novel, Miranda a highly educated girl from a wealthy family uses a diary to keep words as memories. She is intelligent enough to note that words people use to describe ideas, events or concepts are inferior lacking enough description and are only used as ways to conform reality. On the other side, Clegg is just a boy that loves Miranda so much and even had plans to kidnap and put Miranda in his cellar. A diaryââ¬â¢s words change Clegg after he discovers that Miranda does not love him back. Cleggââ¬â¢s unique personality is not to blame. The writer tells us that he has the sociopathic disorder. It shows us that Clegg is sick and you cannot blame a sick personââ¬â¢s action. The sociopathic disorder is a mental condition in which a person has a long pattern of manipulating or violating the rights of others. This disorder troubled Clegg after kidnapping Miranda for a month. That also destructed the people around him. He has an awkward feeling of power and control that is otherwise entirely missing from his life. His relationship with Miranda before reading the diary was good. In the novel, the author says that Clegg could watch Miranda enter and leave the house across the street from the town hall in which he worked. How a child is raised contributes so much to his/her adult life. Apparently, the absence of Cleggs parents during his childhood is what led to him being psychologically scared. It continued and later on affecting his adult life. He did not grow up with his parents. Therefore, he lacks the parental affection every child should have. In the text, it is seen that his hobby was collecting butterflies. He grew up with butterflies as his closest companion which he came to be referred to as a butterfly collector that maybe led to his unique personality. His personality did not only affect him but also affected the people around him. Here he saw Miranda as the beautiful butterfly and wished to collect her and keep her as he did to the butterflies. (Fowles, 23). The words in Mirandaââ¬â¢s diary ââ¬Å"crude, so terribly primitive to a drawing, painting, and sculptureâ⬠(Fowles, 158).Words build and also words destroy. Mirandaââ¬â¢s words killed Clegg at first before Clegg turning back to kill her. Clegg compares the disappearance of his parents to the people he loves. He becomes so attached to a person as per his personality that he happened to have developed when he used to collect butterflies.à He becomes attached to feel safe. He ends up treating Miranda like one of his butterflies. The writer describes the process of catching a butterfly as hard. ââ¬ËIt was like not having a net and capturing the specimen you wanted if your first and second finger, coming up slowly behind and you had it, but you had to nip the thorax, and it would be quivering thereââ¬â¢(Flowles, 40). He says that Miranda was twice as difficult. ââ¬Å"I thought I had better think it over first and then, in any case, I found the diaryâ⬠(Fowles, 308). It shows that even before he read the newspaper, he was unsure of Miranda view of him, but it had not affected him from before. Words are sometimes better left unsaid. He was okay before he read the diary. He only changed after reading it. He is represented as an evil man and an abductor.à Miranda is kidnapped because of the words in her diary. Clegg drives her to his house and forces her to the basement. She is promised to be freed after a month of captivity but goes back on his promise after Miranda tells him she does not love him. John Fowless narrates the encounter and what she did to her before killing her, and it comes out so evil and criminal. Miranda catches pneumonia and desperately wants to be set free. In conclusion, words have incredible impacts on someoneââ¬â¢s life. I agree with Joyce text that although the background might have affected his personality, the words from Mirandaââ¬â¢s diary had a much more impact on Cleggââ¬â¢s life. After reading the diary, Clegg realizes that he might not win Mirandaââ¬â¢s, heart. It makes him plan her death, but after her death, he learns that he should do things differently.à It supports the notion that words have a significant impact on the behavior of a person. They influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress. Clegg ends up neither wanting Miranda nor wanting to free her. Therefore it is not wrong to say that it was the impact of her words that killed her. Therefore, one should not any word for granted but consider its meaningfulness and the relevance in different perspectives
